Development on Hell's Mouth is moving forward fast, and the game is slowly starting to feel like a real living world instead of a random pile of experimental mechanics.
Over the past weeks I've been working on smoke ability animations, strain systems, the main menu, and building out parts of the Helmond-inspired overworld map for the upcoming playable demo.
The goal is still to release a free playable browser demo within the next six months, which will of course be playable directly on Fourplenty.net .
And yes: don't forget to wishlist the game on Steam once the page goes live.
Smoke Abilities & Strain Powers
One of the core mechanics in Hell's Mouth revolves around special strains that grant powers when smoked.
I've recently been working on animated smoke effects for these abilities, giving every strain its own visual identity and gameplay function.
Different strains unlock different powers, allowing players to experiment with builds, movement options, combat styles, and chaotic combinations.
Some strains may increase defense, others might create explosive smoke clouds, while more experimental strains unlock weird supernatural effects.
The idea is that players slowly build their own collection of powerful strains and combine them into ridiculous synergy builds.
Collecting & Combining Strains
Unique Strains
Players can discover and grow different strains with their own effects, stats, and powers.
Grow Your Own
Search for rare genetics, grow stronger plants, and improve your collection over time.
Build Your Playstyle
Experiment with different strain combinations and create your own overpowered smoke builds.
Exploring the Streets of Helmond
Another major focus right now is building the world itself.
Hell's Mouth takes place in a fictional, exaggerated version of Dutch city culture inspired by places like Helmond and Eindhoven.
I've started building sections of the overworld map based on areas around Helmond, including streets, plazas, parks, and urban environments.
I will admit: architecture and environment art are probably my least favorite parts of game art production.
Character art, effects, gameplay systems, and animations are much more my thing. But I still want enough worldbuilding finished before releasing the public demo.
In the future, once budget allows it, I may hire additional artists to help expand the larger world map.
Meet Mary Jane
In Hell's Mouth, you play as a stoner girl named Mary Jane, a chaotic but ambitious protagonist trying to survive and grow her reputation in a bizarre world full of strange figures, dangerous situations, and powerful strains.
Players travel across the city searching for the best strains to grow, smoke, and sell while building friendships, rivalries, and underground connections.
Along the way, you'll unlock stronger grinders, discover hidden strain combinations, and slowly become more powerful as your smoke arsenal expands.
The game mixes Dutch humor, absurd situations, RPG mechanics, and stylized pixel art into a weird but surprisingly deep action RPG experience.
Browser Demo Coming to Fourplenty.net
The current plan is to release a free browser demo of Hell's Mouth within the next six months.
The demo will be playable directly through Fourplenty.net , where players will also be able to log in, track progression, unlock achievements, and compete through the growing Fourplenty ecosystem.
Hell's Mouth is heavily inspired by Dutch culture and humor, but the game itself will be fully playable in English.
More updates, screenshots, and gameplay reveals are coming soon.
And again: don't forget to wishlist Hell's Mouth on Steam once the store page launches.
